This caramelized shallot and wild mushroom pizza comes from Fantastic Vegan Recipes for the Teen Cook by Elaine Skiadas. It’s a rich, flavorful take on homemade vegan pizza that balances sweet and savory elements. Caramelized shallots cook down into a jammy base, while Medjool dates add a subtle sweetness. A mix of wild mushrooms brings earthy depth, and vegan mozzarella pulls it all together.

Making pizza at home is fun, and it’s perfect for sharing. Whether you’re cooking for yourself, family, or friends, this one feels special. The crust bakes up crisp, thanks to a hot pan or pizza stone, and you can top it with almond ricotta and fresh arugula for a bright, peppery finish.

This recipe uses store-bought dough for ease, but homemade works just as well. It’s a great way to experiment with toppings and get comfortable in the kitchen. The shallots and mushrooms take a little time, but the payoff is big. Serve it hot and fresh from the oven for dinner or slice it up for a relaxed weekend lunch. Either way, it’s a solid plant-based option when you want something warm, flavorful, and a little bit elevated.

a caramelized shallot and wild mushroom pizza with dates and arugula
5 from 1 vote
Servings1 large pizza

Ingredients

 • 2 tbsp (30 ml) olive oil plus more as needed
 • 5 large shallots sliced
 • Kosher salt
 • 1 tbsp (15 ml) balsamic vinegar
 • ¼ cup 55 g pitted Medjool dates chopped
 • 2 cloves garlic thinly sliced
 • 1 tbsp (3 g) fresh thyme
 • 8 oz (225 g) mixed wild mushrooms roughly torn
 • All-purpose flour for dusting
 • 8 oz (225 g) prepared pizza dough
 • 1 cup (112 g) non dairy mozzarella cheese shreds
 • Almond ricotta for serving
 • Arugula for serving

Instructions

 • Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C) and place a sheet pan on the middle rack.
 • Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. When shimmering, add the shallots and a pinch of salt and cook, stirring occasionally, for 10 to 12 minutes, or until golden brown.
 • Deglaze the pan with the balsamic vinegar, then add the dates, garlic and thyme. Continue to cook the shallots for another 5 to 7 minutes, or until deeply caramelized. If the shallots seem a little dry, add a splash of water until they break down into a jammy consistency.
 • Transfer the shallot mixture to a plate and set aside. Add another drizzle of olive oil to the pan and cook the mushrooms until they are browned and release their moisture—about 4 minutes.
 • Lightly flour your work surface and roll out the pizza dough to about ½ inch (1.3 cm) thick. Transfer the dough to a sheet of parchment paper and top with a layer of caramelized shallots, followed by the non dairy cheese and sautéed mushrooms.
 • With oven mitts, remove the sheet pan from the oven and carefully transfer the parchment paper with the pizza on top to the pan. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until golden brown and no longer doughy in the center. Serve immediately with dollops of vegan ricotta and arugula.
Tip:
Preheating the sheet pan in the oven yields an extra crispy crust and helps the center of the pizza cook through. If you happen to have a pizza stone, feel free to use that instead.

This pesto plum pizza with balsamic arugula by Makini Howell from her cookbook Makini’s Vegan Kitchen is fresh, vibrant, and full of flavor. It’s not your typical pizza, and that’s the point. Juicy plums bring a sweet-tart bite that pairs perfectly with peppery arugula, creamy basil soy ricotta, and rich walnut pesto.

The homemade elements make it special. The pesto blends fresh basil, walnuts, arugula, and lemon for a bold, nutty base. The vegan ricotta is made from silken tofu and gets its flavor from basil, garlic, and a splash of lemon juice. Both are easy to prepare and add a ton of depth to the dish.

This pizza balances sweet, savory, and tangy flavors in every bite. Serve it to friends or enjoy it by yourself. If you’re looking for a new way to enjoy seasonal fruit or just want a change from standard toppings, this one’s worth trying. It’s simple, elegant, and 100 percent plant-based.

New York-based Blackbird Foods Acquired By Ahimsa Companies https://plantbasednews.org/news/blackbird-foods-acquired-by-ahimsa-companies/ https://plantbasednews.org/news/blackbird-foods-acquired-by-ahimsa-companies/#respond Sat, 22 Feb 2025 18:00:00 +0000 https://plantbasednews.org/?p=348897 Blackbird Foods is the latest plant-based brand to be acquired by Ahimsa Companies after Simulate and Wicked Kitchen

This article was written by Liam Pritchett on the PBN Website.

]]>
Ahimsa Companies has acquired the New York-based frozen pizza brand Blackbird Foods.

The plant-based private equity firm acquired Blackbird Foods for an undisclosed sum on February 17. Following the acquisition, Blackbird Foods aims to collaborate and expand the brand in the coming months to reinforce its position as a key market player.

Blackbird Foods was founded by chefs Emanuel Storch and Mike Pease in 2020 with a limited range of seitan and frozen pizzas. Today, the brand’s products are available in over 3,000 stores across the US, including Sprouts, Whole Foods, and Target.

Blackbird Foods makes four varieties of its proprietary seitan, four types of seitan-based “Blackbird Wings,” and seven kinds of hand-tossed, NYC-style frozen pizza, including a new pepperoni flavor pie made in collaboration with alternative protein powerhouse Beyond Meat.

Consolidating the plant-based food sector

The news follows Ahimsa’s acquisition of Simulate, the company behind Nuggs, in October of 2024. Earlier in the year, Ahimsa acquired Wicked Kitchen along with Good Catch and Current Foods as part of what it called an “industry-wide consolidation effort.”

“We were able to work with these other like-minded brands to really gain more traction and gain more distribution in this space and piggyback off of each other’s followings and fans and customer base as well, and so this acquisition will only allow us to further that collaboration,” Storch told FoodNavigator.

Ahimsa operates with a “shared-services model,” which enables the sharing of manufacturing, retail, and logistics expertise between its acquired brands. Storch told FoodNavigator that combining operations will help Blackbird Foods grow and sustain itself.

Plant-based meat sales fell in 2024, but frozen plant-based meat sales continued to do well, and Blackbird Foods grew its revenues by 20 percent over the year. According to Just Food, Blackbird Foods also raised USD $125,000 in a crowdfunding round on StartEngine in 2024, where the brand claimed to have recorded lifetime sales totaling more than $11 million.

Meatless Farm has announced the release of two vegan meat pizzas in UK supermarkets.

The British plant-based brand, which was saved from administration by the Vegan Food Group (VFG) last year, offers a wide range of popular meat-free meals and products.

Now, it’s added Ham & Mushroom Style and Spicy Pepperoni Style Sourdough Pizzas, which it says is in response to skyrocketing demand for plant-based pizza. (Google searches for “vegan pizza toppings” have grown by 70 percent in the last 60 days, according to the brand).

As well as the pizzas, Meatless Farm has also revamped its frozen range, including Beef Style Meatballs, Pork Style Sausages, and Quarter Pounders. The meatballs have a new recipe, and the sausages and quarter pounders have increased in size.

Meatless Farm There is huge demand for vegan pizza in the UK

“Our new Meatless Farm product ranges have been created to cater for the growing demand for flavoursome, plant-based foods that replicate the taste, texture, and nutritional content of meat,” Lydia Brook, Brand Manager at Meatless Farm, said in a statement. “With quality a priority, we’ve focussed a lot of time on perfecting our ingredients, for example, using high protein meat substitutes with less saturated fat, but no less flavour. We’re especially proud of our Beef Style Meatballs, which we believe are not only the best tasting meatballs in the plant-based-sphere, but also the meat-sphere!”

The pizzas are available from Sainsbury’s stores, while the upgraded frozen items are in Morrisons.

Meatless Farm saved from administration

In June 2023, Meatless Farm made headlines after it was announced that the company had entered administration. In an email to investors at the time, founder Morten Toft Bech said he was “devastated and heartbroken over the situation.” He explained that the company was “doing well,” but that some investors had decided not to invest further.

Later that month, however, VFG (which was then just VFC) confirmed that it had acquired the brand.

“We firmly believe that this development will yield considerable benefits for our valued customers, suppliers, and consumers,” VFC CEO Dave Sparrow said at the time. “Please rest assured that our collective leadership and all team members are wholly committed to maintaining business as usual.”

A few months later, VFC became part of the newly-formed VFG. The group, headed by VFC founder Matthew Glover, owns vegan brands including Clive’s and TOFUTOWN, as well as Meatless Farm.

“VFG is poised to be a leading force in the plant-based sector,” Glover previously told Plant Based News. “We’re not just participating in the market; we’re leading the movement.”

About four percent of the US population is vegan, which is around 13.5 million people. There are loads of vegan pizzas for them to choose from all over the country, and dairy-free pies are becoming more and more popular.

Pizza Chain Purezza To Merge With Artisan Vegan Cheesemaker https://plantbasednews.org/news/economics/vegan-pizzeria-merge-vegan-cheesemaker/ https://plantbasednews.org/news/economics/vegan-pizzeria-merge-vegan-cheesemaker/#respond Mon, 13 Nov 2023 11:08:34 +0000 https://plantbasednews.org/?p=299015 Purezza is expanding its culinary footprint by merging with an artisan cheese brand

This article was written by Daniel Clark on the PBN Website.

]]>
Vegan pizza chain Purezza has announced a major new merger with La Fauxmagerie, an artisan vegan cheese manufacturer.

Purezza has acquired a majority stake in the cheese company, and the two will now collaborate to produce a wider range of dairy-free products.

Founded in 2015 by Stefania Evangelisti and Tim Barclay, Purezza has become well-known in the vegan community for its pizzas. It already features a number of cheeses on its menu, including plant-based versions of camembert and blue cheese. Sibling duo Rachel and Charlotte Stevens started La Fauxmagerie in 2018, and the brand’s wide range of cheeses are hugely popular among dairy-free eaters.

Speaking about the merger, Mitch Lee, head of sales at Purezza, told Plant Based News: “The news of Purezza and La Fauxmagerie joining forces is truly an exciting moment for plant-based cheese.

“Both brands complement each other beautifully and together create a delicious, versatile and planet friendly range of cheese products to suit everyone’s tastes.”

Sustainable food that everyone can enjoy

Purezza opened the UK’s first vegan pizzeria in Brighton in 2015. Since then, it has won prestigious awards and become a mainstay of the plant-based dining scene.

With restaurants now in Camden, Brighton and Manchester, Purezza states that it has sustainably sourced menus. It aims to make a positive impact on health and the planet.

Merging with an artisan plant-based cheese manufacturer is another step in the expansion of its vegan culinary services.

La Fauxmagerie has grown rapidly in the past five years. It is now listed in Waitrose and Planet Organic and has a stand-alone store in Brick Lane, London.

Charlotte, co-founder of La Fauxmagerie, commented: “We’re so excited to be joining the Purezza family who, in addition to being female led, share our mission to increase accessibility to high quality, plant-based products.

“By combining the forces of the best plant-based restaurant and cheese brand in the UK, we can continue to expand our offering together and bring the best plant based products to the world.”

Taking away the dairy but not the taste

Vegan cheeseboard from plant-based artisan cheese manufacturer La Fauxmagerie
Purezza La Fauxmagerie produces plant-based cheeses crafted to mimic traditional dairy cheese

The new collaboration shows that eschewing the cruelty of dairy does not need to come at the expense of taste.

Vegan cheese has taken off in recent years, with dozens of brands now offering challengers to dairy.

Whether made from coconut milk, potato starch, cashew nuts or even peas, these vegan products do away with the suffering of cows in the dairy industry.

As dairy is a major contributor of greenhouse gas emissions, plant-based cheeses also have lower environmental impacts.

Lee added: “Data clearly show the impact that simply reducing your meat and dairy intake can have to your individual carbon footprint.

“There’s so much great work being done in the plant based food sector, and so many brands actively trying to make it easy for consumers to make a difference by simply swapping.

“I hope to play my part in making it easier for chefs and consumers to swap from dairy to plant-based cheese without missing out on the taste, texture or enjoyment. I’m optimistic the future is bright!”

Purezza and La Fauxmagerie will be showcasing both brands side by side for the first time on November 15 and 16 at the Plant Based World Expo.

Papa John’s Vegan Menu: All The Plant-Based Pizzas, Sides, And Desserts https://plantbasednews.org/lifestyle/food/whats-vegan-papa-johns/ https://plantbasednews.org/lifestyle/food/whats-vegan-papa-johns/#respond Mon, 16 Oct 2023 16:15:31 +0000 https://plantbasednews.org/?p=297243 The American pizza company is catching up to catering more for plant-based diets - here’s what you might find on the menu

This article was written by Tamsin Wressell on the PBN Website.

]]>
After introducing vegan Sheese to its menu in 2019, Papa John’s has been incorporating more vegan and dairy-free options. While a few years ago, its vegan pizzas extended to having a cheeseless version of its veggie pizzas (though this is still the case in some countries), the chain’s since grown to cater to those on plant-based and dairy-free diets. It even added a vegan cheese stuffed crust option in its UK locations for all pizza bases in 2021.

Papa John’s is an American pizza restaurant chain that’s branched out across 50 US states and 45 other countries including China and the UK. You can find chains in different countries throughout Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, the Caribbean and North Africa. But the vegan options it offers vary based on location.

Earlier this year, Papa John’s released two vegan pizza options in its South Korea branches to cater to the country’s growing vegan population. Though some of Papa John’s plant-based options that it rolled out in the UK earlier this year for Veganuary, like its Ve-Du-Ya pizza, are no longer available.

But what can you eat at Papa John’s that’s vegan? Here are some of the options you might find on the menu.

Please note: this menu is subject to change, and the items available may be different depending on location. You should always check with your local restaurant if you are unsure that a product is vegan

Vegans in the UK currently have a choice of four pizzas at Papa John’s, with a jackfruit ‘pepperoni’ and plant-based sausages available as toppings. But the list of sides available is steadily growing over the years. There’s also the option to have a vegan cheese stuffed crust in some locations, plus a couple of desserts.

Dairy-free Pizzas

Vegan Cheese & Tomato

A vegan version of a classic, simple pizza. This one is simply Papa John’s own tomato sauce and Sheese, but you can add your own extra toppings like mushrooms and sweetcorn for a more tailor-made pizza.

Vegan Jackfruit ‘Pepperoni’

Another one of its simple pizzas turned vegan. This contains tomato sauce, vegan cheese, and uniquely spiced, sliced jackfruit ‘pepperoni’ to mimic its classic double pepperoni pizza.

Vegan Garden Party

A take on its Garden Party pizza, this one has a signature tomato sauce, vegan cheese, sliced onions, green peppers, chopped tomatoes, sweetcorn, and chestnut mushrooms.

The Vegan Works

This one is an award-winner. Papa John’s signature tomato sauce and vegan cheese is topped with plant-based sausage, jackfruit ‘pepperoni’, chestnut mushrooms, green peppers, onions, and black olives.

Papadias

Vegan Philly Mushroom

Made with Italian flatbread, Papa Johns’ papadias are part sandwich, part pizza. Its vegan Philly mushroom option is packed with melted vegan cheese, mushrooms, onion, green peppers, and ranch sauce.

Adobe Stock Papa Johns vegan options are slightly more limited in the UK than USA

The vegan options in the US are more limited than for the UK and some other locations around the world. It currently doesn’t have any vegan cheese or meat alternative toppings to add to pizzas. It is still possible to eat vegan at Papa John’s in the US, however, with a few options for sides, personalized pizzas, dips, and drinks. You can double check its allergen info to make sure you’re adding vegan ingredients, in case any recipes change.

Pizzas

It’s possible to create a vegan pizza by customizing a delivery order. You can write this in the online order form, or order in person for collection. But whatever pizza you choose, you’ll have to opt to remove the cheese to keep it plant-based.

Pizza dough

The original and deep pan dough bases are vegan. But the thin crust contains milk. The gluten-free base contains egg and milk.

Pizza sauces

The base sauces are vegan: BBQ, garlic, and original tomato sauce. There’s also garlic, pizza, BBQ, and buffalo dipping sauces that are vegan.

What’s Vegan At Domino’s? All The Plant-Based Pizzas And Sides https://plantbasednews.org/lifestyle/food/dominos-vegan-pizzas-menu/ https://plantbasednews.org/lifestyle/food/dominos-vegan-pizzas-menu/#respond Mon, 31 Jul 2023 18:15:29 +0000 https://plantbasednews.org/?p=293511 Domino’s offers a variety of vegan options on its menu

This article was written by Polly Foreman on the PBN Website.

]]>
Domino’s is probably the most recognizable pizza delivery service on Earth, but many people may be unaware that its also increasingly vegan-friendly. The hugely popular franchise has added a number of dairy-free and veggie pizzas in recent years, and its plant-based menu is growing.

The Michigan-based chain was founded in 1960, and it now operates in more than 83 countries worldwide. It has around 15,000 stores, more than 5,000 of which are in the US. Domino’s is known for its trademark logo depicting a red and blue domino with three dots. Its pizzas can be ordered online, over the phone, and it’s even opened some dine-in restaurants in the past.

Whether you live in the UK or USA, here’s everything you need to know about eating plant-based at Domino’s.

Please note: while Domino’s does offer a range of plant-based menu items, the chain cannot guarantee that cross-contamination will not occur. They therefore may be unsuitable for allergy sufferers.

Domino's Domino’s UK offers a range of vegan pizzas

Domino’s introduced its first vegan pizzas in the UK in 2020. These were a Margherita and Vegi Supreme, which both came complete with vegan cheese.

The chain was relatively slow to cater to plant-based consumers compared to its competitors, and it released a statement addressing this at the time.

“Our vegan offering has been a while coming because we’re determined to make sure it’s full of our iconic Domino’s flavor,” a spokesperson said. “We might not be first but we’re always the best – no compromises.” Since then, Domino’s has added a wider variety of plant-based pizzas to its menus. There are as follows:

 • Plant-Based American Hot
 • Plant-Based Peppy-roni
 • Plant-Based Margheri-tastic
 • Plant-Based Vegi Supreme
 • Plant-Based Chick’n Winner

Is Domino’s UK crust vegan?

One of the reasons why it took more time to offer a vegan version was because the original Domino’s base is not vegan-friendly. This is because it contains milk. The plant-based pizzas are made with a vegan version of its classic crust, or you can also choose “Italian Style.”

Speaking about the new plant-based dough in 2020, a Domino’s spokesperson commented: “Our dedicated pizza chefs are incredibly excited for our fans to try this new and improved latest dough as we believe we’ve nailed it”.

Vegan sides at Domino’s UK

Currently, Domino’s has a limited number of sides that are suitable for vegans. These are the Potato Wedges and Plant-Based Nuggets.

What dips are vegan? Is there a plant-based garlic and herb?

Luckily for fans of the Domino’s classic – there is indeed a plant-based garlic and herb dip. Other sauce options include BBQ and Frank’s RedHot.

What about vegan desserts?

At the time of writing, there are no vegan desserts available at Domino’s UK.

Vegan drinks at Domino’s

There are a wide range of plant-based drink options, including Coca Cola, Diet Coke, Coke Zero, Glaceau Smartwater, Fanta, Dr Pepper, Sprite Zero, and Oasis.

Domino’s USA vegan menu

Currently, eating vegan at Domino’s in the US is a bit of a challenge. At present, the chain doesn’t offer a vegan cheese, and it’s thought that its base isn’t suitable for vegans.

According to Veganuary, you can order pasta with the tomato pizza sauce (known as the Robust Tomato Sauce). You can also add veggies to the pasta, such as mushrooms, peppers, and tomatoes.

Another option would be the Mediterranean Veggie Sandwich, but you’ll need to order it without cheese. Robust Inspired Tomato Sauce. Dips suitable for vegans are as follows:

 • Garlic Dipping Sauce
 • Kicker Hot Sauce Dipping Cup
 • Marinara Dipping Sauce
 • Sweet Mango Habanero Sauce/Dipping Cup

Pizza Hut Vegan Menu: All The Plant-Based Options https://plantbasednews.org/lifestyle/food/pizza-hut-vegan-menu/ https://plantbasednews.org/lifestyle/food/pizza-hut-vegan-menu/#respond Tue, 18 Jul 2023 21:14:44 +0000 https://plantbasednews.org/?p=292821 Pizza Hut has been expanding its vegan options over the last few years

This article was written by Polly Foreman on the PBN Website.

A few years ago, the idea of a vegan eating other than corn on the cob at Pizza Hut would have seemed an impossible prospect. But the chain, like many of its competitors, is increasingly catering to plant-based consumers.

Pizza Hut is one of the most famous fast food restaurants in the world, and its menu has traditionally relied heavily on meat, dairy, and other animal products. The American multinational chain was founded in 1958 in Wichita, Kansas, by two American brothers named Dan and Frank Carney. It now operates 17,639 restaurants across the world, as of 2020. Whether you live in the UK or US, here’s everything you need to know about eating plant-based at Pizza Hut.

Please note: the menu is subject to change, and you should always check with your server to ensure that what you’re ordering is vegan. There may be risk of cross contamination at some restaurants.

What’s vegan at Pizza Hut UK?

Pizza Hut first introduced its vegan pizza with dairy-free cheese in 2017. Now, diners can choose from a variety of options and toppings.

Vegan bases include thin, pan, and gluten-free. Vegan stuffed crust is also available at some restaurants.

You can order any of the pizzas with Violife vegan cheese, meaning the vegetarian options can be easily made plant-based. These include the Margherita, Hot ‘n’ Spicy Veg, and Veggie.

Pizza Hut UK also offers a Vegan Pepperphoni Feast pizza, as well as the Flamin’ Buffalo, which features vegan chick*n. It’s worth noting that there is a £1 surcharge for vegan cheese on pizzas.

A vegan pizza with Violife dairy-free cheese from Pizza Hut

If you fancy making your own pizza, you can choose from toppings including vegan Pepperphoni, soy-based chik’n, soy-based chik’n in Frank’s RedHot Drizzle, sweetcorn, cherry tomatoes, black olives, red onions, rocket, mushrooms, spinach, peppers, caramelized onions, jalapeños, green chili, pineapple, and Frank’s RedHot Drizzle.

Sides: are the chips plant-based?

Unfortunately for fans of fries with their meal, the Pizza Hut chips are vegetarian, but not vegan. The onion rings also contain animal products. If you do want to order a side, you can choose the mini Corn on the Cob, which is listed as vegan. Another option is the Vegan Southern Fried Nuggets, which are made from Quorn protein.

Desserts

Unusually for a fast food restaurant, Pizza Hut’s menu does indeed have a plant-based dessert option. This is the I Can’t Believe It’s Not Cheesecake, which is entirely dairy-free.

Drinks

All of Pizza Hut’s soft drinks are vegan-friendly, with the exception of Diet Pepsi. Diet Pepsi contains an animal product, meaning it isn’t suitable for those on a plant-based diet.

The Pizza Hut soft drinks options are as follows:

 • Pepsi
 • Pepsi Max
 • 7 Up Zero
 • Tango Orange
 • Tango Apple
 • Orange Squash
 • Apple & Blackcurrant Squash
 • Bottle of Pepsi
 • Gingerella Gingerale
 • Still / Sparkling Water
 • Sodafolk Cream Soda
 • J2O Apple & Raspberry
 • J2O Orange & Passion Fruit
 • Fruit Shoot
 • Orange Juice
 • Apple Juice
 • Irn Bru (only available in Scotland and some other locations)

There are also a range of vegan-friendly alcoholic drinks. At the time of writing, all beers and ciders are plant-based, which are as follows:

 • Budweiser
 • San Miguel
 • Brewdog Punk IPA
 • Bulmers Original Cider
 • Kopparberg Strawberry & Lime
 • Kopparberg Tropical Fruit

The wines are not listed as vegan, but the Prosecco does appear to be suitable.

What’s vegan at Pizza Hut USA?

The outdoor sign of vegan-friendly fast food restaurant Pizza Hut
Adobe Stock Vegan diners can now enjoy more food than ever at Pizza Hut

Pizza Hut USA hasn’t yet introduced a nondairy cheese, but that doesn’t meat you can’t enjoy a meal there. Most of its bases are vegan-friendly, meaning you can ask for a vegetarian option with no cheese. You can choose from Thin and Crispy Pizza Base, Hand-Tossed Style, Pan Crust, and P’Zone Dough (just make sure you ask for it without Crust Flavor or Buttery Blend). Both the Classic Marinara and Buffalo Pizza Sauce are vegan-friendly.

Vegan toppings include diced tomatoes, green peppers, red onion, mushrooms, black olives, jalapeños, banana peppers, and pineapple.

Sides

It’s thought that the Pizza Hut fries are vegan, but there is a risk of cross-contamination. You can also order the breadsticks without parmesan seasoning.

Desserts

The cinnamon sticks should be vegan-friendly if you order them without icing – but always check with your server.

Drinks

Suitable drinks include Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Aquafina, and Dr Pepper.

Domino’s Just Launched An Entire Range Of Impossible Beef Pizzas In Australia https://plantbasednews.org/lifestyle/food/dominos-impossible-beef-pizzas-australia/ https://plantbasednews.org/lifestyle/food/dominos-impossible-beef-pizzas-australia/#respond Fri, 28 Oct 2022 19:25:00 +0000 https://plantbasednews.org/?p=276455 Domino's has said that it's targeting "flexitarians" with the new range

This article was written by Charlotte Pointing on the PBN Website.

]]>
Domino’s Australia has teamed up with plant-based meat brand Impossible Foods to offer a new range of (mostly) vegetarian pizzas.

The pizzas, which include the Impossible Supreme, the Impossible Godfather, and the Impossible Firebreather, all feature meat-free Impossible Beef.

While the meat iself is totally plant-based, the pizzas, which are topped with dairy cheese, are not suitable for vegans. Some (the Impossible Hamburger and the Impossible Cheeseburger) are not suitable for vegetarians either. This is due to the inclusion of American burger cheese.

According to Domino’s chief marketing officer Adam Ballesty, the Impossible pizza range was created for flexitarians (aka people looking to reduce their meat consumption some of the time).

Flexitarianism is reportedly taking off in Australia. Sales of vegan food in supermarkets has risen by 50 percent in the last few years. Most of that growth is attributed to meat-reducers, instead of vegans.

According to research conducted by Woolworths, 62 percent of its customers purchase animal-free products sometimes.

Pizza for environmentally conscious flexitarians

The flexitarian shift is also reflected in the fast food industry. Just recently, McDonald’s started trialing the McPlant. The burger features a plant-based patty, but the menu option isn’t vegan (due to the mayonnaise and cheese).

“We know that people are actively seeking more sustainable food options,” said Ballesty in a statement.

He later added that whether customers were looking to “reduce” meat consumption or “mix up the menu with flexitarian choices,” the new pizzas “provide a meaningful option without compromising on taste.”

Most people reduce their meat intake for the planet. And according to Impossible Foods, its plant-based beef offers a sustainable alternative to its animal-derived counterpart, as its production emits 88 percent fewer greenhouse gasses.

Domino’s is also working with global media agency Wavemaker to reduce the carbon footprint of its campaign for the Impossible pizza range.

Ballesty noted that the move was “a small step in a larger sustainability journey.”

For The First Time Ever, Pizza Hut UK Offers Vegan Cheese For Delivery https://plantbasednews.org/lifestyle/food/pizza-hut-delivery-uk-vegan-cheese/ https://plantbasednews.org/lifestyle/food/pizza-hut-delivery-uk-vegan-cheese/#respond Wed, 10 Aug 2022 10:14:08 +0000 https://plantbasednews.org/?p=271727 Pizza Hut's restaurants have offered vegan cheese for some time, now its delivery locations have caught up

It’s official, Pizza Hut Delivery has finally added vegan cheese to the menu.

Back in 2017, Pizza Hut became one of the first fast-food chains in the UK to launch dairy-free cheese. But there was a catch: it was only available from its restaurants, not its delivery locations.

According to the chain’s website, there were concerns over cross-contamination due to the smaller size of its delivery kitchens.

But now it appears to have done a u-turn on that decision.

The popular company—which started in Kansas in the 1950s but has now grown into one of the world’s largest pizza chains—is offering Violife vegan cheese in all of its UK locations, both dine-in and delivery.

This means that customers can enjoy the chain’s Beyond Meat pizzas with vegan cheese too. (Previously, they were only available with dairy or without cheese from delivery locations.)

These include the Beyond Italian Style Sausage Supreme, the Beyond Three Meat – which features Beyond Meat’s Italian Style Sausage, Pork Crumble, and Beef Crumble – and the Beyond Beef Sizzler, which comes topped with jalapeños and green chilies.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CWV7m3aMGEC/

Brits want more animal-free choices

The vegetarian options are popular with consumers. In fact, since 2019, the chain has seen a 19 percent increase in people choosing meatless pizzas. This reflects a wider shift in the UK.

A YouGov survey from May found that more than a quarter of Brits are thinking about reducing their meat intake. Most are motivated by environmental reasons. (Animal agriculture contributes 14.5 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.)

Now, the pizza chain’s delivery customers can follow that up with a move away from dairy too.

Violife’s head of UK & Ireland Victoria Slater said in a statement that the brand, which is based in Greece, is “delighted” to offer its vegan cheese in all Pizza Hut Delivery locations.

She added: “The partnership gives everyone who enjoys the taste of Pizza Hut the opportunity to have a positive impact on the planet by just simply switching out their dairy cheese.”

Londoners will soon be able to order plant-based pizzas topped with vegan cheese and Impossible Foods’ meatless nuggets.

London pizza chain NXT LVL PZA, which claims to deliver “secretly vegan pizzas,” has teamed up with California-based brand Impossible Foods to create a nugget-topped pie.

For a limited time only, The Golden Nug pizza will feature Impossible Foods’ chicken-style nuggets. NXT LVL PZA says the option is a “UK first.”

To celebrate the partnership, as well as NXT LVL PZA’s new kitchen in Hackney Wick, the two brands are having a launch party on July 28. It will be hosted by Fat Gay Vegan.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CgO7teONvIV/

‘Redefining fast food’

To ensure the event is as low-waste as possible, sauces will be served in compostable seaweed-based packets. The packaging is made by London startup Notpla.

According to Fabio Matticoli, NXT LVL PZA’s founder and CEO, the company wants to “redefine fast food.”

“I believe we share similar values with Impossible Foods and Notpla when it comes to building a more sustainable, scalable food system and a healthier planet,” he added. “This collaboration makes perfect sense.”

Those who attend the launch event will be the first to try the new nugget-topped pizza. But it will be available for delivery and collection after July 28.

All ticket sales from the pizza party will go to the local food kitchen nonprofit Made In Hackney, which donates plant-based meals to those in need. Get yours here

Ingredients

Dough
 • 500 g strong bread flour
 • ½ tsp salt
 • 7 g sachet of yeast
 • 325 ml tepid water
Filling
 • you can get creative and use whatever fillings you fancy but this was the original version
 • 1 tbsp olive oil
 • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
 • 1/2 bunch fresh basil leaves torn up roughly
 • 150 g cherry tomatoes halved (use mixed colours if you want it to look prettier)
 • 1 courgette finely sliced
 • 8-10 black olives stones removed and halved (better to use the olives with stones as they’ve got more flavour)
 • 1 tsp dried oregano optional
 • 150 g vegan red pesto
 • 150-200 g vegan mozzarella
 • Salt and pepper

Instructions

 • Preheat the oven to 190ºC (fan)/375ºF/Gas Mark 5.
 • Sieve the flour into a large bowl and add the salt.
 • In a jug mix the yeast and water with a fork for a couple minutes until dissolved. Add a pinch of the flour before adding the yeast mix to the bowl.
 • Gather the mixture together with your hands and form into a dough. Knead it well on a floured surface for around 5 minutes until you get a silky, smooth, elastic dough.
 • Place the dough into an oiled bowl and cover with a damp tea towel for about an hour, or until doubled in size.
 • Mix the olive oil and balsamic vinegar together in a large bowl then add the fresh basil, all the vegetables, oregano and a pinch of salt and pepper.
 • Go back to the dough and knead it for 30 seconds on a floured surface before rolling it out into a large rectangular shape, around the size of a tea towel.
 • Rub the red pesto over the dough using your hands and make sure to spread it to the edges. Add the vegetables and ‘mozzarella’ evenly over the base.
 • Roll the dough up lengthways like a Swiss roll, making sure all the toppings stay inside. Cut the roll into roughly 12 chunks (some big, some small). Place the pieces next to each other, swirl side up, in an oiled oven-proof frying pan (approx. 26cm) or a small oiled baking tray. Cover with a tea towel and leave to prove for around 30 minutes or until doubled in size.
 • Place in the oven for 30-40 minutes or until golden. Check after 25 minutes that it’s not browning too quickly.

Pizza Express has opened the doors at its first all-vegan restaurant. The UK-based pizza chain converted its London Aldwych branch following the success of its plant-based launches.

Vegan food at Pizza Express

The eatery will plate up vegan versions of its signature dishes throughout autumn. It has ‘no end date’ and has been set up to celebrate new choices on the menu.

The American Jack, for example, is a vegan take on the chain’s pepperoni pizza, with jackfruit pepperoni taking the place of meat. Pizza Express teamed up with jackfruit specialists Jack & Bry to develop the dish, which took over a year to perfect.

The Vegan Ad Astra – modeled after the meat-based Pollo Ad Astra – also joined the ranks. It comes with Quorn meat, red peppers, red onion, tomato, Cajun spice, garlic oil, and dairy-free mozzarella.

Pizza Express introduced an updated menu at its other restaurants today, too. The new menu boasts the most vegan options to date. This includes 25 mains, six starters and sides, and three desserts, according to its website.

Among the new options is the Vegan Diavolo, topped with smoky jackfruit pepperoni, Quorn pieces, dairy-free mozzarella, Tabasco, chilli, and other vegetables.

‘A huge hit’

Jane Treasure is the Food & Beverage Director at Pizza Express. In a statement sent to PBN, she said: “The launch of our Sloppy Vegan – the vegan version of our popular Sloppy Giuseppe – this summer was just a taste of what was to come.”

“Sloppy Vegan was a huge hit with customers, and it goes without saying that we’re incredibly excited to launch even more vegan versions of classic PizzaExpress recipes across the UK this autumn,” Treasure added.

“Every single one of our new vegan pizzas stays true to the unique flavours of the original versions … so our customers can enjoy the same mouth-watering flavour profiles as the originals, without any animal products.”

The new vegan restaurant is set to stay open throughout autumn. Plant Based News has reached out to Pizza Express to confirm whether the all-vegan menu will stay if the campaign goes well.
