Panther M*lk, a Scottish vegan cocktail brand believed to be the world’s first premium ready-to-drink oat milk cocktail, has landed deals with ASDA and the Co-op, and the beverage will be available in over 50 supermarkets in time for the holiday season.

The drink had already gained national recognition when Glasgow-based owner, Paul Crawford, took the cocktail onto the BBC’s Dragon’s Den, attracting interest from plant-based entrepreneur Deborah Meaden. After his appearance on the hit program, Crawford secured private investment for a stake in Panther M*lk.

The ready-to-drink cocktail is vegan and gluten-free. “Panther M*lk is not only a delicious choice for the socially responsible, but it’s perfect for those who want to enjoy the festive season without compromising their values or the planet,” the company says.

The origins of Panther M*lk

Crawford, who previously owned Glaswegian nightclub Sub Club, was inspired to make Panther M*lk while visiting Barcelona, where he tried the “Leche De Pantera.” The Spanish dairy-based alcoholic drink is said to have been created in the 1920s, with one story saying that military general José Millán-Astray commissioned the creation of a drink for his soldiers, known as the Panthers.

Crawford then set about creating a vegan version, replacing the dairy with oat milk, and a “secret blend of premium spirits.” He began selling the cocktail at a secret bar in Glasgow, and also at Bananmoon in the city. The drink has also been featured at UK vegan festivals, such as Vegfest and Vegan Camp Out

Panther M*lk comes in four flavors: Crema, Rosa, Café, and Menta.

Lincolnshire Co-op Drops Duck Egg Supplier Linked With Animal Cruelty https://plantbasednews.org/news/activism/lincolnshire-co-op-drops-duck-egg-animal-cruelty/ https://plantbasednews.org/news/activism/lincolnshire-co-op-drops-duck-egg-animal-cruelty/#respond Mon, 01 Aug 2022 12:39:29 +0000 https://plantbasednews.org/?p=271379 An ex-worker tipped off animal rights organization Viva! about the conditions at Field Farm

Lincolnshire Co-op has cut ties with a duck egg brand linked with animal cruelty.

Earlier this year, Viva! investigated Field Farm, a duck egg producer that sells under the brand name Quack! Duck Eggs. The farm is also linked with Stonegate, a duck egg producer that works with supermarkets like Waitrose and Marks & Spencer.

Viva! reportedly found ducks living in dirty, “disturbing” conditions at Field Farm. Straw was covered in decaying feces and urine, and there was little access to water baths. (In the wild, ducks spend significant amounts of time dipping in and out of the water, in which they bathe and swim.)

Workers were also caught dislocating ducks’ necks and leaving them suffering.

Drakes were also found repetitively mating with female ducks. Viva! notes this “inevitably results” in supermarkets unknowingly selling fertilized eggs.

Lincolnshire Co-op made ‘absolutely the right decision’

After seeing the results of the investigation, Lincolnshire Co-op decided to initially suspend Quack! Duck Eggs from its supplier list. Now it has delisted them altogether.

Viva!’s managing director Laura Hellwig praised the chain, which has more than 220 stores in Lincolnshire and the surrounding counties, for making “absolutely the right decision.”

“Not only for consumers who are being sold lies about the welfare standards of the farm but also for the poor ducks,” she added.

Viva! was first tipped off about Field Farm’s practices by an anonymous former employee, who said their experience working at the producer “will haunt them forever.”

They noted that Field Farm’s treatment of animals was “absolutely disgusting.”

Duck eggs are becoming more popular, with many seeing them as a luxury in comparison to chicken eggs.

But Hellwig says she hopes more supermarkets will now follow Lincolnshire Co-op’s lead. She added that for “consumers who don’t want to be complicit in the many animal abuses involved in farming,” the “simple” solution is to follow a plant-based diet.

Co-Op Expands Vegan Range After Slashing Cost Of Plant-Based Food To Achieve Price Parity https://plantbasednews.org/lifestyle/food/co-op-expands-vegan-range-after-slashing-prices-plant-based-food/ https://plantbasednews.org/lifestyle/food/co-op-expands-vegan-range-after-slashing-prices-plant-based-food/#comments Tue, 18 May 2021 09:20:15 +0000 https://plantbasednews.org/?p=248583 The retailer is adding six new plant-based products under its Gro brand, including cocktail sausages and 'buffalo' wings...

Co-op is expanding its vegan range after committing to achieving price parity.

The retailer will launch six new plant-based products in time for Summer under its Gro brand.

Co-op vegan range

Customers will be able to choose from meatless burger bites, cocktail sausages, ‘buffalo’ wings, ribs, and a selection of ice creams.

The launch means Co-op will now stock around 35 own-brand fresh, chilled, and ambient vegan products.

Other items include Teriyaki Noodles, Chick’n Kievs, Arrabbiata Ravioli, and more.

Price parity

Earlier this month, the retailer slashed prices of its Gro range to meet carbon neutrality goals.

Some items were reduced by up to 50 percent, such as the GRO Vegan Sausages (was £3.00, now £1.45) and GRO Meat-Free Burger (was £3.00, now £1.35).

Jo Whitfield is the CEO of Co-op Food. She said: “It’s an industry-wide standard that plant-based alternatives are usually priced higher than their meat and dairy counterparts.

“At Co-op, we believe it shouldn’t cost you more money to eat plant-based food. This disparity is unfair to those following vegetarian, vegan, and flexitarian diets.”

Whitfield also said Co-op aims to make its GRO range ‘even more accessible to customers’ to help them reduce their impact on the planet.

She added: “Emissions from our operations and our own-brand products are where we have the greatest responsibility and can make the biggest difference.

“This move is a step in the right direction and we encourage other retailers and brands to consider making the change too.”

‘Brilliant news’

Moreover, Lynne Elliot, Chief Executive of the Vegetarian Society, commended Co-op’s move – branding it ‘brilliant news’.

“We support any move that makes plant-based food more accessible with fewer barriers to purchase,” Elliot added.

“Eating a plant-based diet is one of the best things you can do to help reduce your carbon footprint. And, it’s delicious.”
